Description
John Wilson Foster, Irish Novels, 1890-1940: New Bearings in Culture and Fiction. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2008. 510 pages. GBP 55.00. Recent decades have seen Irish novelists, such as John Banville and Colm Toibin, writing with growing confidence and growing success about topics and themes with little or no Irish connection. Colum McCann is another example. His 1998 novel This Side of Brightness explores the challenges faced by an inter-racial family in twentieth-century New York. The novel's protagonists include Irish but also African-American characters. At one stage, some of them work as sandhogs beneath the East River, digging the Brooklyn-Manhattan underground train tunnel. While caught in an air pocket three of them are forced upwards through the soil and water to the surface. The survivors are taken to a manlock for decompression.
